About the beginning

Well, I decided to take Linda to Germany, where I lived for 3 years, graduated from Kaiserslautern American High School, and join the Navy.  We are traveling with our good friends Dave and Iris Fulcher, who was a good friend I met in the Navy while I was stationed in the Philippines. We decided to go Military Space Available, (It's free) Departing out of a MAC terminal in Baltimore which I didn't even know existed. Linda and I took a Southwest Airlines flight from San Diego in the early morning, got to Baltimore Intl early afternoon and meet up with Dave and Iris there. We all shuttled over to the MAC terminal and check-in with the Space "A" desk, and found there was a flight going to Ramstein AFB in the early evening.  We signed up for the flight and would find out later if we would get a seat.  There were about 200 available, so we were pretty sure we would get on.  We headed off to do some shopping for charging cables, battery extenders, etc. When we got back, we were confirmed on the flight, checked in and were able to get First Class Seating on this Contracted DC-10. What a deal, and it's still free! Great ride over the pond in our reclining seats, I watched all the seasons of Lost, thanks to my extended battery, and enjoyed the ride.  We landed in Germany at Ramstein were we had already reserved a rental car at Enterprise, which was on base.  We loaded our luggage and headed off into the wild what would become another memorable trip.

The trip

The goal of this trip was to head South to Garmish-Partenkirchen which Dave and I had both visited before and we wanted to show the wonders of this place to Linda and Iris. Anyway, we were a little more tired than we thought and did not make Munich on the first leg.  Really we both forgot how far it was and how easy it was to make these road trips when we were younger.  Distance from Kaiserslautern to Stuttgart - 79 Miles. So we headed to Stuttgart where we would spend the night At the US Army Garrison - Stuttgart. Beautiful Panzer Hotel.  Price: $37.50

Next Stop Munich

Even though it is only 137 miles from Stuttgart to Munich, some of us wanted to stop again and take in some of the sights there. Dave wanted to keep going, but we out voted him. Just way too much for us to see in a day, but we drove around and say some sites.  Notice in the pictures below how they still just leave their bikes out on the street and in these bike parks.  We made it to Marienplatz and spent the rest of the day there. The Glockenspiel is the real attraction.

Our Rooms were quite compact, half the size of a small bedroom. The price as I remember was about $100, which didn't't make Dave very happy.

Munich

Marienplatz

The picturesque square known as Marienplatz has been at the heart and soul of Munich since the city's foundation. While its current name owes its origins to the famous Marian Column located in the centre of the square, it was originally called Schrannenplatz, or Grain Market Square, as it was the main marketplace in the Middle Ages.

Marienplatz has played host to important public events and festivities for as long as it has existed, and over the years it has managed to maintain its role as one of the most beloved areas of Munich.

Strolling through the square

Marienplatz today is surrounded by some of the city's most emblematic places of interest:

  • Mariensäule, or Column of St Mary: erected in the centre of the square in 1638 in celebration of the end of the Swedish occupation, the towering column is topped with a golden statue of the Virgin Mary and surrounded by four cupids symbolising Munich's triumph over war, the plague, heresy and famine.
  • Neues Rathaus, or New Town Hall: a striking Neo-Gothic building that has been home to the city's government offices since it opened in 1874. You can climb its tower for views over Munich for just €3.
  • Rathaus Glockenspiel: as well as grotesque gargoyles and a turret-climbing dragon, the Neues Rathaus's façade also features a glockenspiel. Every day at 11 am and 12pm (and 5 pm in summer) the 43 bells and 32 figures of this elaborate "cuckoo clock" re-enact a historical tournament and the Schäfflertanz, or cooper's dance.
  • Altes Rathaus, or Old Town Hall: with more than 500 years of history and many stories surrounding it, the former government building has conserved Medieval look despite several reconstructions over the years.
  • Fischbrunnen: this fountain, located in front of the New Town Hall, can trace its history back to the Middle Ages. The current Fischbrunnen was designed in 1864 and rebuilt after being destroyed in World War II, and it remains one of the city's most popular meeting points.

next stop garmish

Not sure if I mentioned it, but we are traveling in the Winter with lots of snow everywhere.  Top pictures next to the map is a brief stop on the Autobahn for some lunch.  Picture of our Opel rental car, which got amazing MPG on this trip.  Wonder why we cannot get the milages they do in Europe. We will be staying in Oberammergau first.  Little know secret about this town, it is the home of the NATO War College.  Everyone was gone for the Christmas holidays, so we had the run of the place.  Literally nobody but the staff and us. We will be staying at the compound for the first 4 days or so and then moving on to Edelweiss Lodge and Resort for the rest of our stay.

On the Way to Oberammergau

NATO War College Oberammergau

Dave was the one who knew about the  war college from one of his inspection trips when he worked at the Pentagon.  Tight security, even though there was nobody there but us.  We had to leave the car outside the security gate and go thru a personnel check every time we came in or out. Huge dining room with a fully staffed kitchen, we usually only at breakfast there, it was great. Rooms were like most military BOQ rooms and were also nice.  I think we paid $18 or $20 a night there. Very inexpensive compared to what we would have paid in town. They no longer call it the War College, it is now the NATO School. Click below for more on the school.

Oberammergau Passion Play 2022

Every 10 years the town of  Oberammergau puts on the Passion Play.

What made the town famous, was its performance of the Passion of Christ every decade. It is believed that the Passion Play has been held every 10 years since 1634. A play of life and death of Jesus Christ, promised in a moment of mortal threat, and so began the history of the Oberammergau Passion Play in 1633.  During that time, of the Thirty Years War the Black Plague was sweeping through Europe. The villagers of Oberammergau vowed they would perform the ‘Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ every ten years if God spared them from the plague ravaging the region. They performed the Passion of Christ every 10 years from that moment on. The town was spared, and it is amazing that they have been honoring this pledge from generation to generation.

The Passion Play performance follows Christ from His triumphant entry into Jerusalem through His Trial, Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Ascension.

Interesting Facts About the Oberammergau Passion Play

  • To be in the play, you must be a resident of Oberammergau.
  • Over 2,000 citizens are involved including acting, singing, musicians and technical support.
  • There are 124 speaking roles, a 65-member orchestra, 48 person chorus and hundreds of people involved in the back end including stagehands, seamstresses, firemen, auditorium attendants and more.
  • Men grow out their hair and beards to make the look authentic to the time. Costumes are hand made.
  • The play is held May through early October.  During these months, the play is performed 5 days per week in an open-air theater which seats about 4,700 people (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday). The performance begins at 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. There is then a dinner break, and the play resumes from 8:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
  • The play is performed in German, but it doesn’t seem to stop people from all over the world, including those that are not of religious backgrounds that are intrigued by the way the town comes together to perform this play. It is anticipated over 750,000 will attend in 2022.

The Passion Play Theatre is open, and the background of the mountains makes it an unforgettable scene. Passionsspiele Oberammergau

Town of Garmish

The Town is Magical Especially at Christmas

Painted housed, alpine setting and  the people are some of the most gracious we have ever met.  If you can ever get to Bavaria, the people and history are unforgettable.

Edelweiss Lodge and Resort

Time to move on to the Edelweiss Lodge for the rest of our stay.  This is a military Armed Forces Recreation Center Resort.  There are four of these in the world, Hawaii, Florida, Korea and Germany.  We have been to all except the one in Korea. They are 4 and 5 star facilities the military can go to at a reasonable price,  our room was $100 a night.

It was also my birthday while there and we had a great dinner in the hotel restaurant.  How's that for a birthday present! Germany at Christmas.

Edelweiss

In the Picture above you can see Linda and Iris sitting in front of a painting on the hotel that depicts a young man climbing to retrieve an Edelweiss flower for his maid.

The word Edelweiss literally translates to ‘noble white’.

It is also sometimes called a Wollblume (‘Wool Flower’) or Klein Löwenfuss (‘Little Lion Foot’).

Originally, Edelweiss could only be found at very high altitudes, up in the Alps where it survived the harshest of winters. That is why this little flower is associated with strength and toughness.

It also came to be a symbol of courage, bravery and love; because of how high up the Edelweiss grew, if your partner were to bring you an Edelweiss flower, it would mean they have climbed up to a very high altitude to get it! Nowadays, however, the Edelweiss can be found much lower down (but is still a symbol of courage and love).

Ricks High School and where he lived in Germany

It was finally time to leave Bavaria and head back to Ramstein AFB to get on the Space A list to go back home. So we got to Ramstein, and checked to see if there were any flights to the states. Our good luck there was one leaving the next day with plenty of seats.  So we headed to the Air Force INN on base and checked in for the night. Linda and I took the car and went around Ramstein to see where I lived and graduated from.  To say the base had changed was an understatement.  They had closed the base in Frankfort in 2005 and relocated all the Headquarter units and personnel to Ramstein.  Lots of new buildings and even a second High School in the area. Anyway, I had a good time reminiscing as we traveled around the base

Space A and out of here

So, the next day we checked in for our flight back to America and once again we  were lucky and got First Class seats. At least Linda and I did.  Dave did not and he was pissed! I think it was because I was an O-5 and he was an O-4. Anyway, another great ride across the pond and landed in Baltimore. Dave headed back to Delaware and we went on to visit with Tina and the kids in PA.
