Alaska 1/31/17 – Well, we finally retired January 31, 2017 and are working on the details for, what we hope will be, an epic RV trip to Alaska. We will keep you up to date on our progress. 2/15/17 – Rick had surgery on his neck and they fused C2 – C6! Looks like a railroad track in his neck x-ray.

3/15/17 – We both continue to see all our doctors and dentists before the trip. Glad we have good insurance. 6/3/17 – We are one week out. New tires, new batteries, new satellite, new cell extender, etc., etc.,etc.. If we spend any more money getting ready for the trip, we won’t be able to go.

6/10/17 – We’ll we finally hit the road.  Left the house and Molly in very good hands and we are headed to the first stop in Las Vegas.  Departure time 10:00 AM.  Arrived 6:00 PM. Hit some very heavy traffic, so it took longer than normal.  But guess what? We don’t have a schedule! Stayed at the Desert Eagle RV Park on Nellis AFB.  Great park, but construction outside the base had the water shut off.  Good thing we had water in the tank.  Laid low and relaxed the rest of the day. Spent some quality time with Freddie Sr. and Gracie. Took in a Beatles Show, nice to see them again.

6/13/17 – Departed Las Vegas and headed for Zion National Park.  Only a couple of hours out of Vegas, very easy drive. Checked into the WillowWind RV Park.  Very nice, lots of tree shade.  We are 22 miles from the park entrance and since we got here early enough, we headed off the Park to get the lay of the land.  I have a Veterans Access Pass which gets us into all national and federal lands parks for free, so that saved us $30. We drove down one leg of the park, it was spectacular!  I enjoyed those views better the the Grand Canyon.  We are trying to figure out if we are going to Bryce Canyon National Park when we leave here, or head towards Montana.

Zion day two

See what relax looks like

Rode the bus the second day on and off at the various stops.  There were several rescues and ambulance appearances throughout the day.  I figured out which trails would give ME a heart attack! We had a great lunch at the Zion Lodge Restaurant. It was a very good meal.

Salt lake City WalMart

Plan is to depart Hurricane tomorrow and start driving toward Salt Lake City.  Don’t have a stop planned, We are going to wing it.

Salt lake City WalMart

6/15/17 – We departed Zion on time and continued the trek North.  I finally had enough driving for the day and hit some big traffic in Salt Lake City.  We went on a web site called compendium.com and located a WalMart in Syracuse UT that allowed RV parking overnight.  Since we all know Linda’s favorite store, you can guess where she headed right away.  After some re supply, she checked in with the manager and let him now where we were parked.  Good night sleep, I wasn’t happy with the performance of my new batteries.  Lasted all night, but were very low in the morning.  Should have lasted longer. We’ll continue to check on this.

Out of UT into IDaho

6/16/17 – Left early and drove thru Idaho and pulled into Dillon Montana about 5PM.  Pretty full day.  Drove around town. Very cool place.  Stopped in at the local tackle shop to get the low down on the local lakes to fish.  The manager of the park sent a guy from Fallbrook CA to discuss with Linda her quest to learn fly fishing.  He gave us another lake to try and we are heading there in the morning.  Had a good dinner at the local feed bag, good food. We haven't spent much time in this state as our travels have taken us here and there, but it was beautiful and easy to drive thru.

Dillon is in the South West part of the state, so we didn't have far to go after we left Idaho.

6/17/17 – Well, we got up early and were all ready to go to the lake when I realized I didn’t know where the fishing licenses were.  After frantic searching, I broke out the portable printer and decided I would just print them again, since they were online.  Then the printer wouldn’t work.  I thought I would go to the office and email them and print there, but the office was closed.  Back to the coach and I found them exactly where I left them in the license and pass book repository! Damn. Headed to the lake at 0800 and started exploring for a good spot.

Learning to Fly Fish

Montana locals

Found a local named John on the lake that gave us some good tips for where to fish on the East and West side of the Canyon Resouvior.  He, like us is a spin caster.  Almost everyone here are fly fisherman and have no interest in helping a spin caster, let alone someone from California.  We did meet a fly fisherman named Gary who was staying at the same RV park, and guess what, he was from Fallbrook! He, and about 7 other buddies from California come to MT every year for the fishing adventure, and their companionship. Anyway, we finally landed on the East side where I lucked on this fish.  Ran into John as we were leaving and I showed him a picture of mine and he showed me his.  He had to mention that mine looked like the little brother of the two he had caught.  He gave me some pointers on bottom fishing and I learned something I had never heard of.  He took a hypodermic needle and pumped some air into the worm he was using.  He said this will cause the worm to float above the bottom.  Immediately went out and bought the bottom fishing rig he used and a hypo. I will try it when we get to Kalispell, MT in a day or so.  No real mechanical issues yet, hoping that continues.

Kalispell/whitefish montana

6/18/17 – Up early and departed a very nice RV park in Dillon MT.  Stunning views as we continue to head North to Alaska.  We have scheduled our next stay at Spruce RV Park on the River.  We are scheduled to stay here a week, but are considering cutting it a couple of days short.  The river is high and fast and not sure how the fishing will be.

There is not another scheduled stop until the week after the 4th of July, That one is at Dinali National Park, so we don’t want to be late for that one.  I am sure the fishing in Alberta Canada will be excellent and looking forward to that.

Fueled up at a Pacific Pride in Kalispell and headed to the park.  Settled in and headed out for dinner.  Landed at Dave’s Famous BBQ, and was it worth the stop.  Way more food that we could eat for the right price. We ordered a dinner for two and here is the picture. It looks like a meal for four!

6/19/17 – I will try and learn how to fly the drone Micah lent to us for the trip while we are hear.  Should be some spectacular shots. Micah, does it float?

6/20/17 - Charged all the drone batteries and tried a little fishin in the river, but no luck.  Runs very fast and lots of current. Didn’t get a chance to fly the drone, I still have some apps to download. Spent some time looking at maps and think we have to adjust our departure from this beautiful part of the world early.

6/21/17 – Met with Lauren and Sergio Gallegos who we have not see since their wedding ten years ago in Campo California.  Had a great visit and they took us to the #1 restaurant in Kalispell.  They have both grown so much and have wonderful plans for their continuing future in the North.  Cisco and Silvia and Jenny and Pete are very proud of this pair of Aces!

Glacier National Park

Went to Glacier National Park today and had another awe inspiring visit to another of our nations protected prizes.

Now when we got there, or we noticed along the way there was this flower that was striking and we didn’t see in other parts of the area.  When I got to the park entrance Linda had me ask the Ranger what they were.  Turns out sit is called “Bear Grass”, and it blooms every 7 years. This is the year! Deer love to eat them. How strange!

TOOK AND INFORMATIVE AND RESTFUL BOAT RIDE ON LAKE MCDONALD

learned how the glaciers formed this part of the world.  Scientist say all the glaciers here will be gone by 2035.  I’ll be back to see if Global Warming is a myth. Many beautiful sites to see.

6/22/17 – Well the Plan of the Day is to square away the coach and tow vehicle for the trip into Canada.  Fuel, water, get rid of the eggs, check oil in Jeep and coach and re-stow all gear.  Dinner tonight with a very old friend Russ Rhine we met when stationed in the Philippines.  That was in 1979, so it has been a couple of years since we have seen each other. I’m sure we haven’t changed.

Rick went to Whitefish to meet with Russ. I wasn’t feeling well so I stayed home. Rick says they had a great dinner at the golf course and re-told all their sea stories. I’m glad I missed that. Because I was not there, Rick didn’t get any pictures! Russ Rhine is a great guy who has a very colorful career in the Navy and after. He says he is retired, but does farming, tree clearing, house hunting and never slows down. Good for you Russ.

Well, we looked at a map when Rick got back and figured we have been spending too much time relaxing and not enough time driving, so tomorrow we head into Canada.

ACROSS THE BORDER

Alberta Canada

6/23/17 – Checked out of our very nice RV park and took US hwy 2 to the 89N and crossed into Canada at Carway.  Very small border crossing, we were the only ones there. Crossing was uneventful and they didn’t even ask about eggs, beef, vegetables and all the other things we threw or gave away before we left.

Passed thru Calgary at rush hour with a ton of traffic for about an hour and a half. Stressful! Push on to Banff which is the beginning of a string of Canada’s National Parks.  Fortunately for us Canada is celebrating 150 years of independence and all access to their national parks are free for 2017.  We stayed in one of the National Park Campgrounds, it was not free, $45.00 for electric, dump and fill.

Lake Louise

After we left the state campground we went to Lake Louise which was just up the road.  Beautiful lake that you have to see to believe.  Looks like a perfect Honeymoon spot.

Time for some power driving, and we pushed ahead just outside Jasper and stopped at Mount Robson grocery store, fueled up for the next day and spent a quiet night in the parking lot dry camping.  Not bad and saved a few bucks.
