cabo san lucas 2019

Well we finally decided to make the trip to Cabo San Lucas and jumped at a chance to go along with a caravan of RV’s wagon mastered by some very good friends of ours. In the end two of the units dropped out for various reasons and the two of us took off the day after Easter on April 22, 2019.  The Planned itinerary was to enter thru Tecate and head  South thru Ensenada to the first stop in San Quintin.  All went well going thru the border until we hit Ensenada where we had our first encounter with the local Law Enforcement.  Speeding!!!! All the locals were passing us up, but we were pulled over.  (I was warned about this in our web search) After some negotiating we got off with $40 each.  The bribe worked.  Ensenada was tough to drive in and the roads were terrible. Linda is under the weather and not feeling well, but wants to continue.

San Quintin- El Pabellon RV Park

Beautiful place right on the beach! No fresh water, only salt water, but they did have 30amp electric with dump stations on site. We stayed here 2 nights and had a great time Playing on the beach with the Jeeps.

Clams

One of the things San Quintin is known for are their clams. Pismo Clams? big, 4″ across and taste great.  We cut them up, mix with lemon, clamato, katsup and other stuff that tasted very good and ate away. The clam guy came right to our coach in the morning after they had been out in the water digging them up.  They use a pitch fork like device and stick it in the sand in kneed high water.  When they find one they just scoop it up with the device.  Note the guys toes in the van.  He has been doing this a long time.

SIDE NOTE: Linda is still not feeling well, I think she caught the bug Brayden, Anjenae and Micah had the week before.

    GUERRERO NEGRO

We continued to head South to Guerrero Negro.  Driving continues to be challenging.  The narrow roads cause you to meet North bound Semi’s way too close.  You cannot go any farther to the right because the road drops off and there is no shoulder. Hardest part of the whole trip for me is driving these narrow roads.  The road into town is under repair and from talking with the locals it has been for some time.  When we made a sharp right turn into Malarrimo RV Park I actually stopped on the street and got out to check out how to get out.  While towing the Jeep there is no backing up, so tight areas are always a concern.  Come to find out there were two routes around the main hotel and restaurant to the RV park in the back.  Full hook-ups, little tight and I got to bump a tree while backing in.  No damage this time.

    Friends on the Road

Met a great couple Alison and Glenn Kippan traveling with their sons Ben and Dan.  They were in a Jeep Grand Cherokee with tent and all the camping gear they would need for the trip to Cabo and back.  They are from British Columbia and would be on the road for about 6 weeks.  Hearty travelers.

                                                                 ******

Linda seems to be getting worse and I really don’t want to continue to drag her down Baja. She has a fever and it’s time to find a doctor.  Our Wagon Master, who has made this trip many times, was confident they would be able to get her going again.  Down the street we go to a local Farmacia that had a doctor on site.  They sent us across the street where the doctor was and here we found a 23 year old “Doctor” and his 25 year old receptionist who was also studying to become a doctor.  Anyway, after an examination they gave her a shot of penicillin, you would never get that in the states, and 4 other various pills to take.  Long story short the next day Linda was much better and continued to improve as we continued to head South.

    Mulege

Now this was a stop with some needed R&R. Driving continues to be challenging.  We found a Playa (beach) where we could camp right next to the water. The views entering Mulege were stunning and never forgettable. We put the MH together so the awnings created a great shade cover. Edgar was not a good swimmer and was having second thoughts about a deep water swim at our next stop.  As promised, I had him swimming like an olympian while here in Mulege.  The sunrises here were the best.

    La Paz B.c.s.

One of the most beautiful cities in B.C.S.!  We had a great time here. We stayed for three days at a beautiful RV park. Aquamarina RV Park was started 40 years ago by a retired US Merchant Marine. If you know Linda she had to get all the details from the owner Marylou.  Her husband passed 4 or 5 years ago and she now runs the park with a young couple and her maid. The boat below is what they took tourists scuba diving on, it would take 34 couples at a time.  Marylou was the first woman Maritime Captain in Mexico. I have to say, I was very surprised at the quality of the RV parks in Baja. Even though most only had 30amp service, we never even noticed and the views were all spectacular. #14 of 62 Specialty Lodging in La Paz Nayarit Street #10 y Playa Beach, La Paz 23060 Mexico. Stay here if you go down to Baja.

    Swimming with the Whale Sharks

Something I wanted to do while here in La Paz was to swim with the Whale Sharks.  Edgar not so much. We had his confidence up from swimming in Mulege and he agreed, reluctantly, to go with me on the swim. We contacted a local event guy to set it up, and we thought it was going to be a little sketchy from the start.  The guy came to the RV park by taxi and explained the trip and asked for a deposit.  He said he would meet us at the marina the next day.  Violation of our rule number 1 which was never give a deposit to someone we didn’t know.  Well, as you can see, he met us as scheduled and we had a trip of a lifetime.

We met some great people on the shark trip. Two couples from Italy and a young couple from mainland Mexico.  We were invited to visit the Italians in Verona if we ever got to Europe and we did the same for their next trip to San Diego, which they do from time to time.  Linda and I are looking at a Military Space-A trip to that part of the world in the future with a focus on Italy, we have always wanted to go to Venice which is nearby. Aviano Air Force Base is close to Verona so we are going to try and catch a hop there. Here is the crew of the trip.
